Calling attention to that which should be known

It’s the revenge of the average people! You knew they were out there, but you didn’t know they were posting average posts online about their average lives.  Check out My Life Is Average (MLIA) for lots of posts like these:

Today I was watching Hannah Montana and I set it up so when someone walks in I could press previous channel and it would go to SportsCenter. MLIA

Today, my phone had low batteries and started vibrating every 5 minutes to remind me. Every time it vibrated, I got excited and checked to see if someone texted me. No one texted me. MLIA

Today, while exiting the bathroom, I tried to turn the lights off three time before I realized it was sunlight. MLIA

There’s lots more like this to read! So what are you waiting for?

When a friend told me that A23 batteries (a 12V type used in things like wireless doorbells) actually contain eight disc-type batteries (equivalent to type 394s), I was skeptical. After all, there have been urban legends involving batteries within batteries that turned out not to be true. Well, I happened to have an A23 battery on hand (in my doorbell button, actually), so I cut it apart to check. Amazingly, it’s true! Here’s a video….

This guy does a really nice job - I just took a hacksaw to mine (no video available).  More info on all this can be found here.

    Why Are You Fat?

Filed under: Websites; Tagged as: ,

Check out This Is Why You’re Fat, a website I found that shows real photos of food that’s really, really bad for you, including some dishes that look really, really good (at least to me). Here’s just one of the many photos at the site:

That’s the Bacon and Cheese Chicken: Chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce, ranch dressing, and cheddar cheese, topped with bacon. M’m! M’m! Good!

Here is another of my public library DVD discoveries.  Somewhat in the vein of Upstairs, Downstairs, The Duchess of Duke Street (1976) traces the career of Louisa Trotter, a young London woman who is determined to become a master chef.  Set in the very early 20th century (King Edward appears in several episodes), each 50-minute episode immerses the viewer in the milieu of Edwardian England, and the more we see of Louisa, the more we like her.

Donald Liebenson puts it this way in his review of the first of the series’ two seasons:

From the golden age of Masterpiece Theatre comes this beloved 1976 British miniseries by the creators of Upstairs, Downstairs. Gemma Jones gives a performance for the ages in this rags-to-riches saga that charts the ascendancy of the indomitable Louisa Trotter, who rose from scullery maid to become “the finest cook in London” and Edwardian society’s premier hostess. Inspired by the true story of Rosa Lewis, who held court at her renowned Cavendish Hotel, The Duchess of Duke Street is the video equivalent of a good read. Immerse yourself in this lavishly mounted BBC production that impeccably re-creates a bygone era at the turn of the century and captivates viewers with the tragedies and triumphs of Louisa’s story, which includes an ill-fated affair with the Prince of Wales, an unhappy marriage, and struggles with bankruptcy and ill health. But Louisa, Cockney accent intact, prevails as the reigning mistress of Hotel Bentinck.

Fortunately, my library has both seasons! I’m partway through the first season now. So far, every episode has brought unforeseen plot twists and greater insights into the story’s characters. I’ll be sorry to get to the end of this story.
